CUMI Joins DRDO Vikram VT21 Programme

by Aaheli De

Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI) has been selected as the armour solutions partner for DRDO’s indigenously developed Vikram VT21 infantry combat vehicle platform.

The recognition was conferred by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) in Ahilyanagar, where DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat flagged off the Vikram VT21 prototypes.

Under the partnership, CUMI will supply engineered ceramic composite panels designed to meet STANAG Level 2 and 3 protection standards. Each vehicle is expected to be equipped with approximately 300 customised panels to enhance protection against armour-piercing threats.

The Vikram VT21, also known as the Advanced Armoured Platform, is a modular family of wheeled and tracked combat vehicles developed by DRDO in collaboration with industry partners.

Subbu Venkatachalam, Head of Defence & Aerospace at CUMI, said:
“Our patented armour panels are custom-made for indigenous defence combat vehicles, while meeting stringent global standards. With our expertise in advanced materials and fully integrated manufacturing, we have developed armour solutions in India right from the raw material stage. Our commitment is to protect lives on the frontline through advanced material engineering.”

CUMI has strengthened its position in advanced defence materials, having qualified its ceramics portfolio across NIJ, BIS, and STANAG 4569 standards. The company’s earlier collaboration with DRDO-DMRL also includes technology transfer for lightweight composite armour panels used in platforms such as the WhAP 8×8 amphibious combat vehicle.

The partnership highlights ongoing industry collaboration to enhance indigenous defence capabilities, focusing on lightweight, high-performance armour systems designed for improved mobility, durability, and protection in modern combat environments.
