General Atomics, Rheinmetall Advance Artillery Munition Partnership

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) and Rheinmetall have signed a Memorandum of Understanding at Eurosatory 2026 to explore cooperative production opportunities for the Vektrex™ precision-guided munition. The agreement focuses on enabling transatlantic co-production to support artillery modernisation, stockpile replenishment, and interoperability across allied forces.

Vektrex is a maneuvering 155 mm precision-guided munition designed to extend the range and effectiveness of existing artillery systems. It integrates with fielded 39- and 52-calibre 155 mm platforms, enabling rapid adoption across coalition force structures without requiring changes to launcher systems or logistics infrastructure.

The collaboration comes amid increasing demand for industrial-scale munition production as nations seek to rebuild inventories and expand long-range strike capabilities. By combining GA-EMS’ expertise in precision-strike munition development with Rheinmetall’s manufacturing capabilities and NATO-aligned infrastructure, the partnership aims to enable scalable, cost-effective production.

Designed for operations in contested and GPS-degraded environments, Vektrex uses a glide-based aerodynamic configuration to significantly extend engagement range compared to conventional artillery projectiles. It provides a lower cost-per-effect alternative to tactical missile systems while maintaining survivable standoff strike capability.

“Operational demand continues to outpace traditional guided-munition manufacturing output,” said Scott Forney, President of GA-EMS. “This collaboration helps allied industry expand long-range strike capability while leveraging artillery systems already deployed across coalition forces.”

“European and allied armed forces require long-range strike capabilities that integrate rapidly, scale efficiently, and remain sustainable through resilient multinational industrial networks,” said Roman Koehne, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Weapon and Ammunition Division. “This MOU enables both companies to align advanced artillery technologies with established manufacturing infrastructure to support evolving operational requirements.”
