Lockheed Martin Advances HIMARS With New FLEX Configuration

by Arabian_User
Lockheed Martin has introduced HIMARS FLEX, a modernised and modular evolution of its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), designed to enhance mission flexibility across both offensive and defensive fire operations.

Built on the new FLEXFires technology ecosystem, HIMARS FLEX enables expanded munition options, increased autonomy, and scalable configurations while retaining the precision and combat-proven performance of the original system. With over 2.5 million operating hours globally, HIMARS continues to serve as a benchmark in mobile artillery, now extended through this next-generation variant.

“HIMARS FLEX will be a game changer in the future of offensive and defensive fires,” said Tim Cahill, President of Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control. “Our FLEXFires technology suite will let operators scale loadout and add autonomous capabilities without sacrificing speed or accuracy.”

The system is designed for interoperability with NATO munitions, including GMLRS, ER GMLRS, PrSM, ATACMS, and PAC-3, and can integrate seamlessly into joint fire control networks. Retaining its C-130 transportability on the XM1140 chassis, HIMARS FLEX supports rapid deployment across diverse operational environments.

A key feature is its modular loadout, allowing both single-pod and dual-pod configurations. The dual-pod “FLEX” configuration enables significantly increased offensive firepower while also supporting air and missile defence munitions such as PAC-3 and IFPC. This flexibility allows operators to tailor the system to mission-specific requirements while reducing training and sustainment complexity.

“Flexibility, interoperability and proven performance are the three pillars defining today’s most effective deterrent capabilities,” stated Gaylia Campbell, Vice President and General Manager, Lockheed Martin Tactical Missiles. “HIMARS FLEX brings our allies the ability to tailor offensive and defensive firepower to their specific needs while staying connected to a common, battle-proven ecosystem.”

With its shoot-and-scoot capability, enhanced munitions capacity, rapid reload features, and optional autonomy, HIMARS FLEX is optimised for distributed and survivable operations in contested environments. The system is designed to complicate adversary targeting while strengthening deterrence through mobility and responsiveness.

HIMARS FLEX represents a significant step forward in modern artillery and integrated air defence, offering coalition forces a versatile and scalable solution for evolving battlefield requirements.
