Saab Expands Hungary’s Gripen Fleet with New Aircraft Order

by Arabian_User

Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to deliver four additional Gripen C fighter aircraft to Hungary, further strengthening the country’s air defence capabilities and its contribution to NATO operations.

The order follows an amendment to the original agreement signed in December 2001 between FMV and the Hungarian Government for 14 Gripen C/D aircraft. The latest amendment, signed on 23 February 2024, increases Hungary’s total fleet to 18 Gripen C/D fighters, enhancing its ability to secure national airspace and support allied air policing missions.

“With the Gripen fighter, Hungary has one of Europe’s most capable air forces. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the Hungarian Government and defence industry,” said Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.

The expansion of the Gripen fleet reflects Hungary’s continued focus on modernising its air force and maintaining a capable and flexible combat aviation capability. The additional aircraft will improve operational readiness, increase fleet availability and strengthen Hungary’s role within NATO’s integrated air defence system.

Saab continues to provide long-term support for Hungary’s existing Gripen fleet under an ongoing agreement with FMV, covering maintenance, logistics and operational support. The company is also positioned to deliver future upgrades and capability enhancements to ensure the aircraft remain operationally relevant beyond 2035.

In parallel with the aircraft order, Saab and the Hungarian Ministry of Defence signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at developing advanced industrial and technological capabilities within Hungary. The cooperation includes support for establishing a Centre of Excellence for virtual reality technologies, which will contribute to enhanced training, simulation and defence innovation.

The agreement underscores Hungary’s long-term commitment to the Gripen platform while also supporting the development of domestic industrial capabilities. It further reinforces Saab’s position as a key partner in delivering and sustaining modern air combat systems for European and NATO-aligned air forces.
