MDL at IDEX 2025: Exploring Global Opportunities

Arabian Defence spoke with Biju George, the Director (Shipbuilding) of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL), India’s premier warship and submarine building. He shared valuable insights into MDL’s presence at IDEX and the increasing opportunities within the Middle East market. The conversation also explored the evolving global defense landscape, with a particular focus on the growing demand for autonomous and unmanned vessels, and how companies are adapting to these emerging trends. Excerpts from the interview:

Could you talk about your presence at IDEX and how you view the Middle East market?

The Indian pavilion here at IDEX comprises seven defence public sector undertakings, four startups, and two private players. We have come to explore the Middle East market, which holds significant potential. One key area is at the platform level, particularly in naval applications, such as vessels. More importantly, I would highlight the growing strength of India’s auxiliary systems and supply chain, which has now matured. We are able to offer highly competitive prices without compromising on quality, and we aim to provide these solutions to the Middle East. Additionally, as we have a global presence, we are engaging with companies from around the world to explore opportunities to join their supply chains as well.

What are the latest offerings of MDL to the world?

MDL is primarily focused on warship building; surface combatants and submarines, which are our core strengths. In addition to this, we are constructing around 10 merchant ships for a European client. We also build smaller vessels such as OPVs, fast patrol vessels, and training ships. We have the capacity to take on more vessel projects and are able to offer competitive pricing while maintaining quality that meets global standards.

Has there been any change in global demand in recent years? Could you talk about the changing global scenario?

In the defense sector, there has been a significant shift towards autonomous and unmanned vessels, which is expected to become the new norm in the coming years. As a result, every company in India also is gearing up towards to take up those kinds of very niche products which are demanded by the market.

How do you see IDEX? What are your priorities and focus?

IDEX is an excellent forum that exposes us to a wide range of technologies developed in other parts of the world. It provides a valuable opportunity to interact with global clients and industry players, fostering cross-fertilization of knowledge. Beyond the marketing potential, it helps us stay updated on technological advancements and strengthens our global network.
